From how we communicate, to our shopping habits, to how we travel and stay informed, they've had an influence on nearly every facet of our lives. In this blog, we take a look at 12 ways that smartphones have changed our lives.
Figuring Out Directions
Before smartphones, if you wanted to go to a friend's house, visit a new place, or go on a road trip, you had to pull out a real map. Those who didn't have a map would have to go to their home computer, open MapQuest, and print out the directions. Since you didn't have a phone with GPS to recalculate your route, a wrong turn could cause trouble.
Taking Photos
Now, every smartphone has a good camera, and most of them have more than one mode, like portrait, photo, panorama, and so on. Before that, everyone who went on a trip or to a special event had to bring a digital or film camera. Digital cameras made it a little bit easier because you could look at pictures right away and get to them quickly. Film cameras took a longer time to make. Usually, you would get your film and drop it off at a CVS or Walgreens to have it developed.
Sharing Photos
Back then, even sharing photos was different. Before smartphones, you had to ask for two copies of your photos and then give your friends and family the hard copies. Now, you can send photos via text message, Airdrop, or upload them to social media so that everyone can see them.
Long Distance Relationships
Relationships that are far apart are hard. You might not see your partner for a few months. FaceTime and other video chat apps like Skype make it really easy to talk to people on your phone. If you didn't have a smartphone, you'd have to wait until you were near a computer with internet access to log on and talk to someone face-to-face.
Working Remote
Sometimes you have to leave work early to catch a train or get to an event, but that doesn't mean you're done with work. Before smartphones, you had to completely log off and hope that no one needed you right away, at least until you could use a computer again. This sounds like a pretty good way to live. Can we go back to it?
Cooking
The internet has a never-ending supply of tasty recipes that you can look up on your phone. You can also watch step-by-step videos that show you how to cook right there at the kitchen counter. Before that, though, you had to rely on handwritten recipe cards from family members and call Grandma directly if you had a question.
Editing Photos
If you wanted to edit or change your pictures, you would have to hope that your parents had Photoshop on their computer. Today, mobile apps like Instagram and Snapchat make it easy to add filters right away, and more advanced apps let you edit photos like a pro.
Banking
When you needed to deposit a check at the bank, you had to get in your car and drive to the branch that was closest to you. Now, you can use online banking apps to deposit checks from the comfort of your couch. Just take a picture of your check, and the money will be in your account soon.
Checking Movie Times
To find out when movies were playing, you had to either look in the newspaper or wait for the long Moviefone recording to get to your showtimes. Now you can even choose your seats from your mobile phones!
Checking On The Weather
Before, if you wanted to know what the weather would be like for the next hour, you had to turn on the TV and wait for the weatherman to explain it. What's that? You can get an app for that.
Listening To Music
Back in the day, if you had a good music collection, you probably had a huge stack of CDs that you had to carry around in a case. Today, your mobile phone can hold millions of songs, and memberships like Apple Music and Spotify give you instant access to new songs. Oh, and you don't have to bring that big Sony Walkman with you—just don't forget your headphones!
Tracking Down Your Friends
You would have to call your friends or see them in person to find out where they were. With apps like Snapchat and Find My Friends, you can now share your location on your phone or look up your friends in a creepy way.
